Is Turkey using the migration crisis as an opportunity to strengthen its EU bid?
Europe

Is Turkey using the migration crisis as an opportunity to strengthen its EU bid?

Germany and Turkey have a positive meeting over migration Turkey has long been cooperating with the EU on controlling migration flow and establishing quotas. Germany on Sept. 12 reaffirmed its commitment to the EU-Turkey refugee agreement, amid fears of another refugee wave due to the Syrian regime’s attacks in the northwestern region of Idlib. Speaking at a news conference in Berlin, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas expressed concern over recent developments and an increasing number of crossings in the Aegean Sea in recent months. “I have discussed these issues in a phone call with my Turkish counterpart Çavuşoğlu this week. “I had once again highlighted that the EU would honour its commitments under the EU-Turkey refugee agreement,” he said, adding that he expected Turkey would also continue to honour its commitments. “It has been a very constructive discussion. So I believe that the situation will step by step calm down and normalize again,” he added. Last week Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan warned of a new potential refugee influx from the conflict-torn Idlib, Syria, and he urged the EU to take measures to share the burden. He underlined that Turkey might open the doors for refugees to cross to Europe if the EU would not share the burden. While this is continued cooperation between Turkey and the EU, Turkey’s renewed interest could signify another push to use cooperation on the migration issue to strengthen its bid to enter the EU. Is Iran taking advantage of the increasing rift between the US and EU?
Europe

Is Iran taking advantage of the increasing rift between the US and EU?

Iran closes the door on the US Iran has appeared to close all doors of possible re-establishment of talks with the US, as Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has ruled out holding any bilateral talks with the United States and threatened to further cut commitments to the country’s crumbling nuclear deal with world powers within days. “Maybe there has been a misunderstanding. We have said it several times and we repeat it – there has been no decision to hold bilateral talks with the US,” said Rouhani. “In principle, we do not want bilateral talks with the United States,” he added. Last month, Iran’s stance towards the US has shown that it has not changed or even worsened, as, in his speech, Iranian President Rouhani also struck a muscular tone on dealings with the US, saying that “talks are useless” over the nuclear deal. “Now that our enemies do not accept logic, we cannot respond with logic,” Rouhani said. He added: “When the enemy launches a missile against us, we cannot give a speech and say: ‘Mr. Rocket, please do not hit our country and our innocent people. Rocket-launching sir, if you can please hit a button and self-destroy the missile in the air.’” If the situation between Iran and the US is to de-escalate, the US will have to present an opening or improve terms. Does the disposal of Salvini signal the fall of the far right in Italy?
Europe

Does the disposal of Salvini signal the fall of the far right in Italy?

Did Salvini make a mistake in calling for snap elections? The leader of Italy’s ruling League party, Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, declared the governing coalition to be unworkable on Thursday after months of internal bickering and said the only way forward was to hold fresh elections. The shock announcement follows a period of intense public conflict and debate between the right-wing League and its coalition partner, the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement, and it throws Italy into an uncertain political future. Salvini said in a statement he had told Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, who belongs to neither coalition party, that the alliance with 5-Star had collapsed after barely a year in power and “we should quickly give the choice back to the voters”. 5-Star was the largest party at last year’s elections but it has struggled since the government was formed, while Salvini has prospered thanks to his popular hard line on immigration and a charismatic and informal “man of the people” public image. It now appears that the move was a mistake, as he took a risk that did not pay off and created a hostility that got him removed from governance. The EU is standing up to Trump: 5 Geopolitical Effects You Need to Know

1. EU wants to address trade imbalance with the US The EU wants to address its increasingly imbalanced trade relationship with the US at the upcoming G7 summit. French President Emmanuel Macron looks to lead Europe’s defensive strategy against a trade-heavy White House agenda that has pushed the continent into a variety of uncomfortable disagreements. Trump may not like this approach, and his reaction is unlikely to be positive, but the EU remains hopeful. 2. Tusk attacks Trump In a move that further stirs tensions between the parties before the G7 summit, as Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, announced that “under no condition” will the EU agree to Trump’s suggestion to invite Russia back into the G7. In fact, Ukraine may be invited as a guest to next year’s summit. “One year ago, in Canada, President Trump suggested reinviting Russia to G7, stating openly that Crimea’s annexation by Russia was partially justified and that we should accept this fact,” Tusk said. “Under no condition can we agree with this logic.” Officials from Germany, France, and the United Kingdom made similar comments earlier in the week. Tusk went on to explain: “When Russia was invited to G7 for the first time, it was believed that it would pursue the path of liberal democracy, rule of law, and human rights. Is there anyone among us, who can say with full conviction, not out of business calculation, that Russia is on that path?” This is certainly a negative preview to talks at the summit as tensions seem high. Is France taking control of the European Union? 5 Geopolitical Effects You Need to Know

1. Macron wants to force Britain’s fast exit from the EU Emmanuel Macron and France appear to have the power to force Britain out of the EU on their terms and are looking to use it. As a result, president Macron also has his eye on wider French national economic interests. Poaching jobs and lucrative business from the City of London and Canary Wharf would help Paris eclipse London. Manufacturing displaced from the UK could come to France. This is clearly in France’s own interest and not aligned with the EU’s potentially leading to a crash between the two parties. 2. France clashes with EU on climate France has already clashed with the EU, in another sign that it has taken to its own path to reach its goals, as Emmanuel Macron has branded Brazil’s president a liar and threatened to block the European Union’s trade deal with the Mercosur countries as he prepares to whip the Group of Seven leaders into climate action. “Under these conditions, France will oppose the Mercosur as it stands,” said a French official. Although France and the EU agree on opposing the Amazon fires, France is taking a much more hard-line and direct approach unlike the EU. Russia and the G8: 5 Geopolitical Effects You Need to Know

1. Russian Concessions to the West The US President Donald Trump expressed his support for reinstating Russia into the G8. The Kremlin would certainly have to make some serious concessions in order to renew its membership in this inter-governmental political forum. French President Emmanuel Macron already said that Russia can't return to the G8 format before the Ukrainian crisis is resolved. In other words, Moscow will, most likely, have to end its support to the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic and Lugansk People's Republic. Such move will be seen as an open betrayal of the pro-Russian forces in the Donbass. However, the Kremlin political technologists will undoubtedly try to portray it as another geopolitical victory. 2. Return of Crimea as a Condition Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, on the other hand, wrote on Facebook that Russia can return to the G8 if it returns Crimea to Ukraine, ends the conflict in the Donbass and releases 24 Ukrainian sailors who were captured at the end of the last year during the Kerch Strait accident. During the Macron-Putin meeting on Monday, French leader said a resolution of Russia's annexation of Crimea would be the "magic wand" to bring Russia back into the G7. Even though Russia was expelled from the old G8 format after it incorporated Crimea into the Russian Federation in March 2014, at this point it's unlikely that Moscow will be willing to discuss the future of the peninsula. Reality check for Boris Johnson: 5 Geopolitical Effects You Need to Know

1. Lack of options for the UK Despite the confidence Boris Johnson has brought to Brexit negotiations, Britain’s position is worse than ever, as they appear to have been backed into a corner. Among the most major economic issues that the UK will face in the case of a hard Brexit, regardless of preparations, are a weaker pound and slowing economic growth. In the event of a no-deal Brexit, the exchange rate of the pound sterling would probably fall, inflation would rise and GDP growth would be slower, according to the minutes of the British central bank’s monetary policy meeting. In its quarterly inflation report, issued on Thursday, the BoE also lowered its growth forecast for 2019 and 2020 to 1.3% from the original forecast of 1.5% and 1.6% respectively, due to Brexit uncertainties and slower global economic growth. Meanwhile, a no-deal Brexit would be even more catastrophic to the economy. 2. Merkel gives Johnson ultimatum to avoid no-deal Brexit Angela Merkel has challenged Boris Johnson to come up with a solution to avert a no-deal Brexit “in the next 30 days” after the British PM’s meeting with the German Chancellor to discuss the situation. Merkel also suggested that the backstop was “a placeholder that will no longer be necessary” if a solution to the impasse over the Irish border can be found. The strong stance of Merkel and the EU has seemed to soften Johnson’s stance as in response to Merkel’s overture, he sought to convey a willingness to compromise in his appearance with Merkel, saying that he was “glad” to hear his German counterpart setting such a “blistering timetable”. French President Emmanuel Macron to meet Vladimir Putin: 5 Geopolitical Effects You Need to Know

1. Pressure on Russia French President Emmanuel Macron is due to host Russian President Vladimir Putin for talks at his holiday residence in Bregancon in southern France on Monday. Putin is seldom invited by major Western powers for visits at a time of growing tensions between Russia and the West. Macron is expected to put pressure on Russian leader to end the conflict in the Donbass and to release 24 Ukrainian sailors captured during the Kerch Strait incident at the end of last year. 2. The Implementation of the Minsk Agreements According to Alexander Baunov, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Moscow Center, the main public issue will be reviving the Minsk accords signed in 2015. Recently, Russia, Ukraine and the OSCE have recently announced an “indefinite” ceasefire in the Donbass. As expected, the truce has not been implemented, and the Minsk agreements remain a dead letter. “Peace progress” is possible only if Moscow ends its support to the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic and Lugansk People’s Republic. It remains to be seen if Putin will be ready to fulfil such demands. Italy in Political Turmoil: 5 Geopolitical Effects You Need to Know

1. Salvini calls for new elections The leader of Italy’s ruling League party, Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, declared the governing coalition to be unworkable on Thursday after months of internal bickering and said the only way forward was to hold fresh elections. The shock announcement follows a period of intense public conflict and debate between the right-wing League and its coalition partner, the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement, and it throws Italy into an uncertain political future. The call for an election looks like a smart move by Salvini at the right time, but it remains to be seen whether it will happen. 2. Increased focus on anti-migration Salvini and the right-wing coalition has clearly noticed the popularity it is gaining from its anti-immigration policy and is stepping it up. Italy now appears to be targeting rescue boats on the Mediterranean, which has sparked the concern of the UK and the EU. The new law which was passed gives the government in Rome more authority to block ships trying to bring migrants ashore. US-France Trade War? 5 Geopolitical Effects You Need to Know

1. France to continue technology tax despite US threat France’s finance minister says that it will continue to carry out a plan to tax technology firms, despite a threat of tariffs on French goods from US President Donald Trump, according to Reuters. France’s senate had passed the controversial bill earlier this month, and it was signed into law by President Emmanuel Macron this week. The bill places a 3 percent tax on technology firms that earn more than €750 million ($834 million) in global revenue and €25 million in France, and would target the revenue that those companies earn in the country. That would affect nearly 30 companies around the world, not just firms from the United States. US president Trump responded by tweeting yesterday that the White House will “announce a substantial reciprocal action,” and that he could levy a tax against French wine, while The Office of the United States Trade Representative had also opened an investigation into the tax. Despite this France is showing no signs of stopping the tax, and is set to go ahead with it as planned. 2. France follows US in launching Space Force In another move that seems to challenge the US, months after President Donald Trump announced the creation of the U.S. Space Force, France is beginning to lay the groundwork for its own version. Macron announced last month that the nation’s air force will establish a space command for the purpose of national defense, particularly to protect French satellites. The French military currently operates a constellation of three Syracuse satellites that are primarily used for communication between the mainland and French troops deployed abroad. But after the new cameras are tried and tested, France will launch another generation of Syracuse satellites that will also be able to destroy enemy satellites. The upgraded Syracuse satellites will be armed with either submachine guns or lasers that could disable or even destroy another satellite, according to Le Point; France aims to have those space weapons fully operational in orbit by 2030. France’s minister of armed forces Florence Parly, said “We will conduct a reasoned arsenalization.” This is a sign that France is responding to the US’s own arsenalization, initiating a space rivalry, despite Parly denying an arms race in space.
